Ponytail Palm care
Beaucarnea Recurvata
A swollen bulbous base topped with a fountain of long, curling leaves like a ponytail. Despite the name it's not a palm at all — it's a succulent, which means it stores water and forgives neglect. Pet-safe, too.
Light
Bright light is ideal — a south or west window with several hours of direct sun keeps it happy and full. It tolerates medium light but grows sparse there.
Water
Let the soil dry out completely between waterings — that swollen base holds plenty of water. Every 2–3 weeks is typical; once a month in winter.
Overwatering is the only real way to kill a ponytail palm.
Soil & pot
A fast-draining mix — cactus soil or potting mix cut heavily with perlite and sand. A drainage hole is non-negotiable.
Humidity & temperature
It likes it dry and warm — 65–80°F. Average home humidity is perfect; it doesn't need misting.
Propagation
Mature plants sometimes produce offsets (pups) at the base. Carefully cut a pup with roots and pot it up. They grow slowly.
