Parlor Palm care
Chamaedorea Elegans
If you love large pet-friendly plants, consider getting the splendid Parlor Palm. This small, easy-care palm grows to 3–4 ft. tall over time and thrives in the kind of low light most rooms actually have.
Light
Low to medium indirect light is ideal — the parlor palm earned its name brightening dim Victorian parlors. It tolerates low light happily, though it grows faster with a bit more brightness.
Keep it out of direct sun, which scorches and yellows the fronds.
Water
Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry. Parlor palms dislike soggy soil and will yellow from overwatering faster than from neglect.
In winter it grows slowly and needs even less water — when in doubt, wait a few more days.
Soil & pot
A light, well-draining potting mix with some perlite or sand mixed in. A drainage hole is essential — these palms rot easily in standing water.
Humidity & temperature
It likes moderate to high humidity but adapts to average homes. Brown frond tips usually mean the air is too dry — a pebble tray or grouping plants helps.
Keep it 65–80°F and away from cold drafts and heating vents, which dry it out.
Propagation
Parlor palms grow from a single stem, so you can't divide them the way you would a bushy plant. Most people grow new ones from seed, which is slow — it's easier to simply buy another.
