Cast Iron Plant care
Aspidistra Elatior
Named for being nearly indestructible. Long, arching dark green leaves that tolerate low light, neglect, and dry air — a true set-it-and-forget-it plant that's also pet-safe.
Light
Low to medium indirect light is perfect — it earned its reputation brightening dim rooms. Variegated varieties keep their stripes with a bit more light.
Avoid direct sun, which scorches and bleaches the leaves.
Water
Water when the top couple inches of soil dry out. It tolerates drought well, so when in doubt, wait a few more days — soggy soil is its one real weakness.
Reduce in winter when it barely grows.
Soil & pot
Any well-draining potting mix. A drainage hole is required.
Humidity & temperature
It's indifferent to humidity — average homes are fine. Keep it 60–75°F and away from cold drafts, which can spot the leaves.
Propagation
Divide the plant at the roots when repotting. Each division needs a few leaves and a chunk of rhizome. It's slow but reliable.
