Why your calathea is drooping or wilting

Drooping / wilting on a Calathea

Okay, let's take a look. A drooping calathea looks dramatic but it's usually the plant asking for something simple — it's thirsty — calatheas droop and curl their leaves dramatically when dry, then unfurl after watering. Don't panic; we'll figure out which.

Why is my calathea drooping?

Drooping is the plant's version of a faint. it's thirsty — calatheas droop and curl their leaves dramatically when dry, then unfurl after watering Check the soil: bone dry means it's thirsty; soggy means the roots are drowning and can't take up water. Both look the same from above.

How do I fix a wilting calathea?

If the soil's dry, give it a thorough drink until water runs out the bottom. If it's soggy, let it dry out — and check that the pot isn't sitting in a puddle. Most calatheas perk back up within a day once you fix the water.

Is my drooping calathea dying?

Probably not. Drooping from water stress bounces back fast. The time to worry is if the stems feel mushy — that points to root rot, which needs a repot. Give it a day after watering before you decide.
