African Violet care
Saintpaulia
A compact rosette of fuzzy leaves topped with clusters of vivid purple flowers. African violets bloom almost year-round indoors if you give them steady, gentle care — and they're pet-safe.
Light
Bright, indirect light is the sweet spot — an east or north window is ideal. Too little light and it won't bloom; too much direct sun scorches the fuzzy leaves.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy, and water from the bottom — cold water on the leaves causes spots and rot. Let the top of the soil dry slightly between waterings.
Use room-temperature water; they dislike cold.
Soil & pot
A light, well-draining African violet or peaty mix. A drainage hole is essential, and they like to be slightly rootbound to bloom.
Humidity & temperature
They like humidity but hate wet leaves — a pebble tray under the pot works well. Keep them warm, 65–75°F, and away from cold drafts.
Propagation
Take a healthy leaf with its stem, dip it in rooting hormone, and set it in moist mix. It'll grow a tiny new plantlet at the base in a few weeks.
